M.A.S.S. 2019 Secular Scholarships
The 2019 Secular/Critical Thinking Scholarships offered by the Missoula Area Secular Society will award two $1000 scholarships to residents of Missoula county based on essays written about one of the topics below. This competition is open to all graduating high school students and college students working on their bachelors degree. One application per person, each applicant can only be awarded one scholarship. Winners from previous years are not eligible.
All entries must be received by April 31th, 2019.
Please choose one of the topics below for your essay of 500-750 words.
(1) Do you know several members of a culture different from your own? To what degree and in what ways are the two cultures similar? How are they different?
(2) How do changes in laws pertaining to regulation of federal lands affect individual citizens of Montana; how would the same changes affect Montana businesses? Give examples to illustrate your stance on the issue.
(3) What would be the pros and cons of requiring churches and other religious organizations to pay property taxes? Provide examples to support reasoning.
Criteria used for evaluation: the essays will be ranked based on how well they address the topic of choice.
Decisions will be made by May 31st 2019 and scholarship recipients notified then.
